Get Trained

"If you’re a craftsman, we want to make you a math instructor. If you’re a math instructor, we want to make you a better craftsman."  --Joe Youcha

We offer a two-step training process for organizations that want to become certified to use the Building To Teach hands-on teaching methods and materials. To get started, submit an application so we can get to know you better and we will contact you to assess your organizational needs. View upcoming training workshops.

Level One - Online Training:
When you are approved for online training, you will be given access to a training website with materials and resources to become trained in the Fundamentals of Math, Elements of Instruction and the Bevin's Skiff boat building project. Once you have successfully completed Level One training, you can apply for Level Two certification, which allows you to access additional materials and receive grants and other support for your program through the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Building To Teach grant.

Level Two - In-Person Training:
This training is for individuals who have completed Level One training. In-person training takes place during a 3 ½ day workshop at the Alexandria Seaport Foundation. The goal of this training is to prepare Instructional Groups to meet the criteria of the ONR grant listed below in order to access additional teaching materials and financial support:

1)    Direct, hands-on instruction to at least 60 students a year using Build To Teach projects. Instructional time will not be less than 15 hours with a typical instructor/student ratio of 1:8

2)     Measurement of students’ STEM skill attainment using the Building To Teach skill list and CanDo software (provided by Building To Teach at no cost)

3)    Coordination of the direct involvement of industry volunteers (training of volunteers provided by Building To Teach)

4)    Feedback to improve Building To Teach materials

5)    Designation of a Building To Teach instructor who will attend a 3 ½ day training workshop in Alexandria, VA (travel and lodging costs underwritten by Building To Teach up to $750.)
